Adventures of a Homeowner: Disaster Strikes - 09/05/13

We hear thunder. Then, see a flash. POW! Lightning strikes almost immediately. The whole neighborhood goes dark leaving us to watch the storm by candlelight.

Winds manhandle our cluster of trees in the backyard whipping our newly-purchased hammock into the branches below. Cracks of thunder send our dog into an anxiety attack and the lightning show holds her attention. Then, we think it's over.

The flashes in the sky quickly turn to flashlights moving around our front yard. My husband goes to the door to see what all the activity is about, and I hear "Oh my God!"

A 50 foot tree sits on top of my husband's car.

Here's a little background: last year while living in Oklahoma City, my husband's car was almost destroyed by hail damage. Lets just say he's had all he wants of Mother Nature.

Bonus -- the tree is blocking our driveway and 75 percent of the street trapping my car in the garage.

Did I mention we've been in the home for less than a month? As a first-time home buyer, I expected to encounter a few problems early on, but the storm rolled through just four days after our air conditioning unit went out on a 102 degree day. When we first moved in, we didn't have any hot water.

I realize these are first world problems, but c'mon! Haven't we suffered enough? We just want our showers to be warm, our home to be cool and our cars to be debris-free.

I don't know how you homeowners do it, but my hat's off to you! I'm exhausted.

P.S. I would love to hear your first-time homeowner experiences. Any storm damage?
