“If you took a left turn instead of taking that right, you could be somebody different.”
- Dave Matthews BandAs #11 Missouri comes to town for a Saturday night showdown with #1 Texas, I thought it might be fun to play a game of “hypotheticals” and ask – personal bias aside - who would you root for in this situation?
Just pretend that you grew up a fan of one of these two teams. Your parents went there. First football game you ever attended – that school’s bowl game for the 1983 season. You grew up knowing every player that played. You went to every single big rivalry game that team played growing up, pulling for that school. More or less, you bled that school’s colors.
As you were going through high school, you had a decision to make about college - and that decision came down to your parents’ school, or this other school. You visited your parents’ school, but even they told you that for wanted you wanted to do – you should go to this other school.
Eventually, you chose the other school.
You spent your college career trying to buy in to what your new school was selling – but it was hard. As mentioned, you grew up living and dying by every play of every game from your other school. Your new school played your parents’ school, and you never really knew deep down for whom you were rooting (other than knowing you always wanted to beat your parents at something).
12 years later – those two schools are meeting again – and this time it’s in a showdown that could finally give your school the marquee win it needs to get back in the national title hunt.
Because your parents’ school – Texas – just beat OU and is now the # 1 team in the country.
And your school – Missouri – was just upset at home by OSU and is now desperate for a win to stay alive in the title hunt.
So it’s a simple question – personal bias aside - who would you root for in this situation?
Me? I’m rooting for…………………………………………………………………….
