'Before Midnight' Serves as Festival Favorite

Updated: Wednesday, March 20 2013, 09:22 PM CDT

Richard Linklater brings another addition to make a trilogy of the lives of Celine and Jesse, who met 18 years ago on a train in Europe in Before Sunrise. The second installment, Before Sunset, left us with Jesse, unhappy in his marriage, spending the afternoon with Celine in Paris. They end up at her apartment, with her saying, “you are going to miss your plane.” Jesse simply replies, “I know.”

In Before Midnight, Celine and Jesse are now in Greece. Their relationship suffers when they get caught up in the day-to-day activities. This is one of the most real depictions of a couple that is in love, and truly cares for each other.

Before Midnight is a romantic drama, but it has raw honesty, and some of the most intelligent dialogue that you will ever experience in a film. It’s exciting because we get to see Celine and Jesse in their 20s, then a little more mature 9 years later in their 30s, and now in their 40s, with a deeper relationship. We get to see their growth, and you really become invested in these characters.

Richard Linklater is the most underrated director in the industry, and after seeing Before Midnight you will understand why.

The movie comes out May 24.
