Bettie's Box Office: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes Review

Updated: Friday, July 11 2014, 01:23 PM CDT

Apes Rule! Dawn of the Planet of the Apes is one of the best movies of the summer. It's a sequel that far surpasses its predecessor in script, directing, acting and effects. And, keep in mind, I liked the first one.

The movie takes place 10 years after a deadly virus has all but wiped out mankind. Surviving humans and genetically evolved apes live unaware of each other until a chance encounter puts them on a collision course. Actor Andy Serkis (Gollum from Lord of the Rings) returns as Caesar, now grown and leader of the Apes. He gives a soulful, riveting performance that made me tear up a time or two. This story is deeper than you'd think, with undercurrents of trust, betrayal, oppression and kindness - and that's just on the ape side!

The computer-generated effects are terrific; they really make Dawn of the Planet of the Apes an epic sci-fi war movie. The 3D adds some immersion, especially in Muir Woods and the battle scenes, but it's not absolutely necessary. Still, I'd pay full ticket price - and spring for the 3D glasses - to see it again.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes opens Friday, July 11 and is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and brief strong language.
