Capital City Men’s Chorus Ends Season Saturday

Updated: Wednesday, May 9 2012, 04:02 AM CDT
The Capital City Men’s Chorus will invite audiences to “Just Go to the Movies” as they perform highlights songs from the silver screen on May 12 at St. Martin’s Lutheran Church.  Under the direction of Artistic Director Dr. Jeffrey Jones-Ragona, the 23rd annual spring concert will feature music from films of all eras.

Now in their 23rd year of continuous operation, Capital City Men’s Chorus remains Austin’s premier men’s chorus.  The 501(c)3 non-profit organization is also a member of the Gay and Lesbian Association of Choruses (GALA Choruses).

The show features the 40-man chorus singing and dancing to numbers such as “I Know Where I’ve Been” from the film Hairspray, “I’m Super” from South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut and “42nd Street” from the film of the same name.  The chorus will dedicate the numbers “Look Over There” from La cage aux Folles to “mothers and those who love us unconditionally” in honor of Mother’s Day, and “I Know Where I’ve Been” to the late Bettie Naylor, for her tireless efforts in advancing the cause of equality.

Kenn Wells provides the choreography for the concert.  Wells’ professional career has spanned more than 30 years, and he has worked with some of the preeminent dancers of the modern era - including an acclaimed turn as "Mercutio" in Rudolph Nuryev’s production of Romeo and Juliet.  He also originated the role of "Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat" in the original 1981 London production of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Cats.

Tickets for the concert are $20 in advance and $25 at the door.  Doors will open at 7 p.m., with the performance beginning at 7:30 p.m.

St. Martin’s Lutheran Church is located at 606 W. 15th Street, and free parking is available in the adjacent church lot.   For advance tickets and more information, call (512) 477-SING or visit http://ccmcaustin.org/tickets.
