Carnaval Austin Celebrates 37 Years

Updated: Tuesday, January 14 2014, 01:54 PM CST

Carnaval Brasileiro presents Carnaval Austin, which is the largest indoor Brazilian Mardi Gras celebration in the world, comes to Palmer Events Center on Saturday, February 1, 2014.  It's located at 900 Barton Springs Road.

Carnaval's spirited atmosphere comes from the 6,000 attendees and the exotic costumes they wear that range from traditional Brazilian to the creation of something thematically in a group, which Brazilians call a bloco. Even though it's not required to be dressed in costume, you might have a greater time if you are decked out as well. Face and body painting will also be available onsite for a minimal fee. If you haven't experienced this wonderful at least once, it's time for you to get you a costume.

Additionally, there are two bands that will create the high energy in the room. New York's Beleza Brasil is making their eleventh appearance in Austin. They provide a mix of samba, frevo, marchinha, and bloco-afro. Also, the Austin Samba School is the largest Rio-style escola de samba in the United States with 40 drummers and 40 dancers. Their show, music, and costumes are inspired by the 1959 classic film, Black Orpheus, which is this year's theme. Carlinhos Pandeiro de Ouro, who played one of the featured child roles in the film and has become a major figure in Rio, will make a special appearance at Carnaval Austin.

A portion of the proceeds from Carnaval will benefit the Austin Sunshine Camps, a non-profit organization which provides mentoring, leadership programs, and free summer camps for Austin at-risk kids.
