Austin’s newest early music ensemble launches their second season with "Series of Unfortunate Names" featuring works by composers whose names elicit different reactions today.

Austin’s newest early music ensemble, Ensemble Settecento, embarks on their second season featuring two orchestral concerts, two chamber concerts, a Bach cantata and a full opera.  The new season travels musically from Paris in the 1680s to the cathedrals of colonial Mexico and the Ursuline Convent in New Orleans, and from Mozart’s Vienna to
the Thomaskirche in Bach’s Leipzig.

The season opens on September 22nd and 23rd with "Series of Unfortunate Names."  Words' meanings change over time, and last names are often no exception.  The season opening concert features a wide variety of music from an almost 200-year span by composers whose names tickle the funny bone, raise an eyebrow or two - or both.

Some composers' names were innocuous in their own time, but are humorous or risqué today and some non-English composers' names arouse a giggle from Anglophones.   The concert will include works by John Blow, Johann David Heinichen, Gottfried Finger, Samuel Scheidt and others.

Performances will be September 22nd a t 8 p.m. at United Christian Church - located at 3500 W. Parmer Lane - and September 23rd at 3:30 p.m. at St. David’s Episcopal Church, located at 301 E. 8th Street.    Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and $5 for students with a valid ID.  Special pricing is also available for elementary, middle and high school students with adult admission purchase.

An informal and informative pre-concert talk will begin 30 minutes before each performance.   For more information and tickets, call (512) 912-6827 or visit www.EnsembleSettecento.org.
