Fantastic Fest: Dredd 3D

Updated: Saturday, September 29 2012, 10:22 PM CDT
Dredd 3D premiered at Fantastic Fest’s opening night.  Karl Urban (Judge Dredd), Olivia Thirlby (Anderson), and writer Alex Garland was in town for the festivities.  This was such a non-egotistical role that Urban jumped on.  Not many actors would have taken it, but it shows his shows his character.  Urban and Thirlby have great screen chemistry.

Based on the UK comic, Judge Dredd does his best upholding the law in a place called Mega City One, with a population of 800 million people.  Crime dominants the metropolis to the point that the Judges can only handle 10% of the crimes committed.  The Judges serve as judge, jury and executioner.  A drug called SLO-MO, which alters time by making the brain feel that its passing at 1% its normal speed, is being sold by dealers.  Dredd and a new trainee, Anderson are on the case.

The 3D is done well here, especially with the use of the SLO-MO drug almost halting time.  This is a great popcorn movie that doesn’t disappoint.
