Review: Men In Black III

Updated: Monday, June 4 2012, 01:28 PM CDT
Grade: C

It’s been 15 years since the Men in Black franchise began.  Does anyone still care?  Well, for the parents who were in their 20s and are now 40 with pre-teens or teenagers, it will be fun for both of you.  It’s worth a watch, especially for Josh Brolin’s dead on impersonation of Tommy Lee Jones, who plays his character when Agent K goes back 43 years to save him, even though there’s only 21 years difference in the actors’ ages.

In Men In Black III, Agent J (Will Smith) and Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) are still partners at the Men In Black agency.  Some power overcomes Agent J one evening and he realizes that Agent K doesn’t exist because he was killed by an alien criminal called Boris the Animal (played by Flight of the Conchords’ Jemaine Clement).  This has altered the agency and put Earth in jeopardy.  Agent K travels back to July 16, 1969 to save his partner and humanity, but learns so much more when he is back there.

Overall, Men In Black III kicks off the summer and is a fun ride while it lasts.  If you are going for Tommy Lee Jones, you will be disappointed, because he is only in it for about 20 minutes.  This is the Will Smith Show and he makes you laugh without over doing it.  The 3D isn’t very necessary even though it makes for some great entertaining in some of the fights against the aliens, mostly in the Chinese restaurant.  Rick Baker, the special makeup effects artist, still moves us with the aliens he comes up with.

Ken’s Movie Review Grading Scale

A – Superb and solid; a movie that will be etched in your mind 10 years from now

B – Good movie, so good in fact that you would want to see it again before it’s out of the        theaters; the story may drag in places

C – Average, entertaining at parts; you might want to wait and rent it

D – Lacks a lot from entertainment, plot, realism, development, etc.

F – Terrible and you will want to walk out of the movie; no redemptive qualities whatsoever
