Rock of Ages on The Stage

Updated: Friday, September 21 2012, 06:34 PM CDT
Rock of Ages will be at The Long Center September 25 - 30.  What makes this live performance different than other Broadway performances is the interaction that takes place with the audience.  With nearly 30 ballads from the 80s from Journey, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, and more, it’s one fun night!

Dominique Scott plays the 23 year old male lead named Drew.  I talked with him about his role and how he prepared for it. Scott says, “I think it is sooo well written and so much fun.  I had seen it with Constantine (Maroulis from American Idol who originally played Drew and is also in the film) twice on Broadway and then once with my friend Dan Domenech (the current Drew).”

Scott wasn’t so lucky at first.  He auditioned one day at an open call and was cut.  “I knew the role was too perfect for me not to even be considered, so I went home and made a video.  I sent the video to the casting director, and a couple of weeks later I got a call to come in for the final day of callbacks – and I booked the show,” according to Scott.  So as you can guess, this made him relate to the character even more since Drew is also chasing his dreams.

“I was in New York just a couple of months ago busing tables with big hopes and dreams just like Drew.  And just like Drew…things are coming together.”

Scott has played Chris in Miss Saigon, Jesus in Jesus Christ Superstar, and Will Rogers in Will Rogers Follies, but he believes that it doesn’t get any better than playing Drew in Rock of Ages.  “I love improv and getting to fool around with the audience is in fact, one of my favorite aspects in getting to do Rock of Ages every day.”

With all the incredible 80s ballads that this Broadway play has, Dominique Scott does wish they had added Hot Blooded by Foreigner.  He sings it with his band, Domin8trx, all the time.
