Directed by Estevan "Chuy" Zarate and playing September 13th through 29th at Salvage Vanguard Theatre, the faith of a Texas bordertown is tested by a man who may be a saint.

Teatro Vivo explores spiritual hope and beliefs with the debut the new play Cura, written by Raul Garza and directed by Estevan “Chuy” Zarate.  Uncovering what happens when faith is tested to its limits, the production runs September 13th through 29th at the Salvage Vanguard Theater.

The play's title - the Spanish word “cura” - means both “cure” and “priest.”  Set in a small Texas bordertown in 1938, a humble, defeated woman of faith encounters both spiritual hope and crisis in a young man who may or may not be the legendary Curandero/Saint, El Niño Fidencio.  The cast features Mateo Barrera and Annabel Guevara.

Playwright Raul Garza’s first full-length play, Fantasmaville, received the 2007 National Latino Playwriting Award.  As a writer for Austin’s Latino Comedy Project, Garza contributed to numerous stage and touring shows. When not writing plays, he teaches yoga, fills up on pop culture and serves as co-founder and creative director of TKO Advertising.

Garza has been recognized for creative excellence by industry publications, including Advertising Age, and by the American Associations of Advertising Agencies.  Garza is also an Adjunct Professor of Communications at St. Edward’s University, teaching integrated campaigns courses.

Since its first year in 2000, Teatro Vivo continues to be one of the only bilingual Latino theater companies in the state of Texas and has produced more than 24 full-length productions, a variety of performance collaborations with other arts organizations and several theatre workshops for traditionally underserved populations in the Austin community.  The theatre company has garnered numerous nominations for acting, writing, and design from both B. Iden Payne Awards (Austin Creative Alliance) and the Austin Critics Table awards, including the Cohen New Play Award.

Performances will be Thursdays through Saturdays at 8 p.m.  Tickets on Fridays and Saturdays are "Pick Your Price” of $15 or $20.  All Thursday performances are “Pay What You Wish."

The Salvage Vanguard Theater is located at 2803 Manor Road.  For tickets and more information, visit: www.TeatroVivo.org.
