The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

If you know anything about the film festival portion of SXSW, you know that they pick strong films to open the festival and close the festival. This year, the choice for opening night was The Incredible Burt Wonderstone.

If you’ve seen the trailer, you wouldn’t think to yourself that this would be the choice to kick off SXSW. Well, after you see it when it’s released on March 17, you will understand why it was chosen and that the trailer doesn’t give it justice. Screenwriters Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley bring the same punch to Wonderstone that they brought to Horrible Bosses. In ways, this film is even funnier with Jim Carrey playing Steve Gray, a rip off of David Blaine, but looking much more like Axel Rose. There’s a lot of campy humor here, but this film has feeling as well.

Burt grows up doing magic tricks with his best friend, Anton. Thirty years later, Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton (Steve Buscemi) are big time magicians at Bally’s (think Siegfried and Roy) in Vegas. They are some of the best performers selling out show after show until Steve Gray shows up giving them a run for their money. Gray accomplishes outlandish stunts like putting a drill through his head and lying on hot coals. After a series of events cause Burt and Anton to go their separate ways and their right hand female goes to assist Steve Gray, Burt knows that he has to make things right.

Steve Carell is truly the one who shines in this film. His role is so different and eccentric, he creates a character like no other one he has done before and this one has a lot of heart.
