Trouble With The Curve: Likable Cast Makes This Predictable Film Very Watchable

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:06 PM CDT
Imagine "On Golden Pond" on a baseball diamond instead of a lake, and you pretty much have "Trouble with the Curve." Clint Eastwood takes the edge off the grumpy old man he played in "Gran Torino" as an aging talent scout for a pro baseball team. Amy Adams is his attorney daughter with a lifetime of unresolved daddy issues. She tries to help save his job by going with him to check out a North Carolina high school player. Justin Timberlake shows up as a former player and competing scout, and it's obvious from the outset that he will play into the happy ending.

The plot is predictable, but a good cast, including John Goodman, makes it watchable. "Trouble with the Curve" doesn't pull at your emotions as strongly as "On Golden Pond" and you don't ever get the feeling that professional baseball really works this way. But the troubled relationship between Eastwood's and Adam's characters is worth the ticket price. "Trouble with the Curve" is rated PG-13 and opens September 21.
