Austin Formula 1 Racetrack Opens Saturday For Running Event
Updated: Tuesday, October 30 2012, 10:40 AM CDT
Runners who want to check out the new Circuit of The Americas racetrack in southeast Travis County but not pay for a ticket can take part in the Formula Run around the track this Saturday.
Up to 5,000 runners will cover the 3.4 mile asphalt circuit. The run begins at 8 a.m. The kids' run is at 9 a.m.
Anyone wanting to participate may register at site.runtex.com/index.php/2012/08/formula-run/.
The RunTex Foundation is co-host of the event. Partial proceeds from run registration fees will go to support the Onion Creek Greenway project, Travis County’s first Greenway initiative. Once completed, it will form a 21-mile corridor of hike and bike trails that will link to Richard Moya Park near the Circuit site.
“The Onion Creek Greenway project will allow for fishing and picnics among the pecan groves and Travis County’s native vegetation,” said Precinct Four Travis County Commissioner Margaret Gomez. “Environmentally, this project will serve to help restore the floodplain which was previously used for agricultural purposes.”
The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix is Fri., Nov. 16 through Sun., Nov. 18. The Circuit of The Americas track is in Southeast Travis County. At the same time, Downtown Austin hosts a street festival, Austin Fan Fest.
