Abbott Wraps Up Campaign Tour In Austin Thursday

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT
On Thursday in Austin, Attorney General Greg Abbott wraps up his first campaign tour as a candidate for Texas Governor.

It's the final stop of his 5-day tour just days after Governor Rick Perry announced he won't seek re-election.

The primaries are still months away, but Abbott's not wasting any time campaigning. Besides hitting two cities per day across Texas during the week, he also hosted a town hall on Twitter Wednesday night, answering questions and in many cases debating hot-button issues.

With the governor's seat wide open, the Attorney General-turned-gubernatorial candidate plans to drum up support at Scholz Garten on Thursday, just blocks from the Governor's Mansion, where he'll likely cover the same ground seen throughout the tour: focusing his message on "hard-working, middle-class Texans", relating his experience overcoming adversity with a disability, criticizing the federal government, pushing low taxes and a strong economy, and advocating his pro-life stance.

While still early in the game, many consider him the frontrunner to replace Perry. To date, he's raised more than $20 million. He's not the only Republican throwing their hat into the ring: Tom Pauken, former head of the Texas Workforce Commission, has also announced his candidacy.

So which Democrat will challenge Republicans in 2014? Right now, that's up in the air. No Democrat has announced their candidacy, and the party hasn't won a statewide office since 1994.

However, many say State Senator Wendy Davis (D-Fort Worth) and her headline-making filibuster during the abortion debate re-energized the party, but she hasn’t said that she’ll run. However, she’s reportedly raised around $1 million since the filibuster, and according to the Huffington Post, she’s planning to go to Washington, D.C., next week to raise more money.

Abbott's stop at Scholz Garten is set for 5 p.m. Thursday. Former UT quarterback Colt McCoy is expected to be there as well. Abbott is stopping in El Paso Thursday morning.
