Airport Busy Early Monday Morning As Holiday Nears

Updated: Monday, December 23 2013, 07:57 AM CST

It's one of the busiest weeks at Austin Bergstrom International Airport, and Monday is when officials expect crowds to really ramp up. Around 600,000 Texans are expected to head to airports all across the country this week, and winter weather in other parts of the country is causing headaches for travelers.

Long security and ticket counter lines already began forming Monday morning even before the sun came up, with many travelers telling KEYE-TV they were arriving two hours early to allow extra time. Lines appeared to be orderly and moving, and nearly every flight listed on the electronic status board showed "On Time".

AAA expects nearly 8 million Texans will travel on the roads and skies through New Years Day. That's up slightly from the holiday period during the same time in 2012. But it's likely to feel noticeably more crowded at ABIA. This year, the airport has seen travel shooting up six percent.

Airport officials say you should get to the airport at least 90 minutes early and check you flight status frequently.
