APD Cracking Down on Pedestrian Safety

Updated: Tuesday, March 11 2014, 08:16 AM CDT

Police are cracking down on pedestrian safety in South Austin.

APD launched a pedestrian safety initiative this month focused on reducing traffic crashes. A zero-tolerance policy is now in place and officers are keeping an extra eye out for jaywalkers, disobeying pedestrian control signals and solicitation of rides or businesses.

According to police, there have been 1,757 pedestrians injured in traffic crashes over the past five years.  Of those accidents, 96 have been fatal.

APD encourages everyone to use caution when crossing roadways and follow basic safety tips including: walking on the sidewalk, crossing at crosswalks, wearing bright clothes to be seen and watch for vehicles when backing out of driveways.

Police say the ultimate goal of the initiative is to change behavior, not write citations.
