Austin Celebrates Belated End To Slavery

Updated: Tuesday, June 19 2012, 07:42 AM CDT
On June 19th, 1865 in Galveston, slaves in the Lone Star State were told they had been freed and that their relationship with their owners was now one of employer and employee.  This was great news, but it arrived in Texas more than two years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation.

The day that slaves in Texas got the news has come to be known simply as Juneteenth. And here in Austin it is always marked with celebrations benefiting the Greater East Austin Youth Association.

On the agenda today:

 9:00am 2K Walk and Run
10:00am Historical Parade
12:00pm Juneteenth Celebration at Rosewood Park

The party at the park will include live music and vendors and last until 9:00pm.
