Austin Companies Collaborate To Reduce Waste And Create Jobs

Updated: Thursday, February 27 2014, 09:28 AM CST

Reducing waste, while creating jobs. Three local Austin companies are collaborating on a project that will take one company's waste down to zero.

BuildASign.com produces 6.5 million square feet of vinyl posters yearly and while the company is a leader in limiting their waste, Chelsea Woodhead, Director of Culture and Communications at BuildASign.com says there is still room to improve.

Company officials made the decision to partner with local business BlueAvocado, an eco company that turns recycled materials into stylish beauty, lunch and travel products. With the help of the design team at BlueAvocado,  BuildASign's remaining scrap vinyl is being transformed into one-of-a-kind totes and messenger bags.

Open Arms, a company who employs refugee women who have resettled here in Austin, has been brought on board to make the bags. Thanks to this project, Open Arms has been able to provide more jobs to women in need. The company will also receive a profit from the sales, along with Blue Avocado and BuildASign.com.

Now for the first time these eco friendly totes are available to the public. You can purchase them on BlueAvocado or wait until summer 2014. Whole Foods will be selling the stylish totes in stores for $49.99.
