Austin Learns X Games Fate This Morning

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT
Wednesday is the day: after nearly a year's wait, Austin finds out whether it will host the X Games for the next three years. It's a move that could potentially pump millions of dollars into the city if Austin beats out Chicago, Detroit, and Charlotte.

On Wednesday morning, we'll find out if Austin will be the newest home to the Summer X Games from 2014-2016. At 9 a.m. ESPN is set to announce whether Circuit of the Americas and Austin will host the four-day extreme sporting event.

The games recently had a $50 million impact in Los Angeles, bringing in more than 135,000 visitors. Steve Sexton, COTA President, recently told Austin City Council members those figures could be conservative for Austin.

"I would contend that Austin is known to be much more of a 'now' city than Los Angeles, which should attract a larger visitation," said Sexton, during the May 21 work session. He says an economic impact study specific to Austin would happen if the city lands the games.

Austin City Council members have already approved up to $150,000 in fee waivers for things like public safety and trash cleanup. Organizers plan to ask the state for money from their Event Trust Fund.

The X Games also put L.A. front and center on TVs in 380 million homes in 175 countries. ESPN is already with the Longhorns, which judges say helps.

"It certainly helps that we have a footprint here," said Scott Gugliemino, an ESPN judge, during a visit to Austin in June.  "But what we are really after at this stage is whatever we end up with, it is a great location and a great partnership long term."

The Austin bid has also been dominating the three other bid cities on social media. The Austin X Games Facebook page has more than 33,000 likes, nearly double those of Detroit.

On Wednesday morning, page administrators were calling on those fans to put in last-minute pitches for the Capital City on the main X Games Facebook page.

Win or lose, Circuit of the Americas will hold a press conference shortly after the decision.
