Bettie's Box Office: The Counselor Review

Updated: Friday, October 25 2013, 06:30 AM CDT

The Counselor is a film full of gorgeous people and even more gorgeous words. But, somehow, the two fail to result in a very memorable movie.

Thisis the story of a counselor who decides to invest in a drug shipment going from Juarez to Chicago. Everyone involved tries to warn the counselor about crossing the legal line. So, as you might guess, when the drug shipment disappears, the counselor finds out he's about to do the same.

There's a lesson to be learned here and that's the movie's glaring weakness. The characters tend to wax philosophical about choices and destiny.  It's interesting dialogue but it doesn't really fit the characters or the situations.

A slew of Hollywood A-listers star in this thriller, with few thrills. Brad Pitt, Javier Bardem, Michael Fassbender, Cameron Diaz and Penelope Cruz join forces with director Ridley Scott and writer Cormac McCarthy.

Some of my favorite scenes are with Cameron Diaz. She breaks out of her typical ditzy blonde roles to play a cold as ice, scheming girlfriend. On the other hand, Penelope Cruz is pretty, but pretty irrelevant, as the counselor's fiancé.

The Counselor has a great cast, writer and director, but it never comes close to living up to its potential. Using the Bettie's Box Office rating system I'd say save your cash and rent it when The Counselor comes out on DVD.

The Counselor is rated R for graphic violence, some grisly images, strong sexual content and language. It opens in theaters on October 25.
