Bettie's Box Office: The Lone Ranger Review

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT

The Lone Ranger rides again. This time around, Armie Hammer puts on the mask as a dashing, but reluctant hero. His somewhat trusty sidekick, Tonto, is played by Johnny Depp.

A better name for this film might be Pirates of the Caribbean meets the Wild West. The same team that made Pirates changed up the scenery, but not much else about the money-making formula.

Don't get me wrong, Depp is one of the best things about the movie, but his quirky expressions are almost too familiar.

The Lone Ranger definitely has enough entertainment value to make it worth seeing. But, using the KEYE-TV ratings system I'd rank this movie a "Matinee". That way you'll feel like you got your money's worth.

The Lone Ranger will have some box office competition over the long 4th of July weekend and it's coming from the minions.

Despicable Me 2 hits a high note with the pitch perfect voice cast of Steve Carrell, Kristen Wiig and Russell Brand.

It's expected to open big, maybe even bigger than The Lone Ranger. The original, Despicable Me, grossed more than $540 million and became the 10th-biggest animated motion picture in U.S. history.
