Cedar Park City Council To Vote on Gateway Signs Tonight

Half a million dollars for new welcome signs, and that’s just for start-up costs. That’s the proposal Cedar Park is set to vote on Thursday night. It’s a story KEYE has been following since first getting a news tip about it over the summer.

Council will have the final vote Thursday night on whether or not it goes through, though citizens did get a say on the design. Earlier in the year the city posted the online survey where voters could choose between contemporary or traditional design, the latter of which council approved in June 2012, of the so-called gateway signs.

Nine of these “gateway” signs would go around the city limits. The city’s 4B Community Development Board is behind the plan. They and some board members hope the signs will help further promote Cedar Park, brand it, and give the community an identity.

The $500,000 price tag is just the start. Paying to have the signs built and right of ways at some locations will cost the city too. Some council members believe the city has bigger needs. One council member mentioned better roads. The mayor told us he wants to start with a couple of signs then go from there.

A half-cent sales tax set aside for community and economic development projects would pay for the signs. A council member said they won’t impact tax rates or the city budget.
