Conscientiousness Key To College Success

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:12 PM CDT

Great high school grade point averages or test scores right now are key to getting you into a good college like the University of Texas.  But they may not predict how well you'll do in college.  Researchers are studying how much your personality traits figure into whether you will be successful in college.  We're not talking about your bubbly personality.  More specifically they're examining what they call "The Big Five" personality traits:

Agreeableness

Conscientiousness

Extraversion

Neuroticism

Openness to experience

And of the big five, researchers at Rice University found a link between higher levels of conscientiousness and high grade point averages.  Wiki defines conscientiousness as being thorough, careful and vigilant with a desire to do a task well.

Sam McAbee, a psychology graduate student at Rice and the study's lead author, tells the Houston Chronicle that the new study could be used among college admission offices and even employers who use personality tests to measure potential for success.  And how did the researchers at rice come to their conclusion?  They did a study of 51 previous studies that investigated the relationship between personality traits and college grade point average.
