Cool Schools, Westwood High School

Updated: Thursday, November 7 2013, 08:58 AM CST

Westwood High School helped kick off KEYE's first Cool Schools for the 2013 season. Westwood has been rated the top 60 high school in the nation and the top 10 high school in Texas by Newsweek.

Prinicpal Laurelyn Arterbury says Westwood High School takes pride in their academics and not only prepares students for college, but also for the workforce through the school's Academies program. Students choose between the Academy of International Business and Economics, Academy of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, Academy of Professional Studies or Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and leave high school with occupational skills and credentials.

However, it's not all work, Student Council makes sure there are plenty of groups to join. President, Austin Pho says there's a constant emphasis on adding clubs students enjoy, like break dancing. On November 21st Student Council will host a Spaghetti Dinner for the public to attend. It starts at 6:00 pm and the money raised will help fund prom.

Westwood is a 5A school with 300 plus band members. Jack Green, Director of Bands, is proud to announce the percussion group will be competing in the Lonestar Percussion Competition, Saturday November 9th.

A special thanks to Westwood High School cheerleaders, sundancers, band, percussion team, color guard, Student Council and Student Academy Ambassadors for joining KEYE on Cool Schools.
