Cracking Down On Drivers That Pass Parked School Buses

Updated: Wednesday, March 26 2014, 08:46 AM CDT

Drivers beware! The Georgetown Police Department is cracking down on drivers who pass parked school buses.

The bus safety program will utilize CrossGuard, a new technology that snaps a photo of vehicles passing a school bus when the bus is stopped to board or drop off children. The snapshot of the license is sent to police and then a citation is issue to the driver.

Georgetown ISD Transportation Director Walt Prothro says GISD bus drivers counted more than 430 violations of vehicles passing parked school buses in less than 30 days.

"This is a very serious safety matter. If we can save one child's life, then this program is well worth it," says Walt Prothro, Georgetown ISD Transportation Director.

The new program officially kicks off at Williams Elementary School at 9:00 am.
