Crashes Kill Three In 24 Hours On Austin-Area Roads

Updated: Thursday, November 28 2013, 06:07 AM CST
Wednesday marked a deadly day on Central Texas roads: three fatal crashes in one day. The latest happened just after 10 p.m. on FM 969, shutting down the road. Police say a driver struck and killed a man in his 60s, who police say was in the street, on FM 969 near Highway 183.

"The driver's here, he's cooperating with us, he did stop, and we don't believe alcohol is a factor," said Cpl. Christopher Eveleth of Austin Police Department, on scene shortly after the crash.

The other two deadly wrecks were both head-on crashes. The first happened early Wednesday morning around 6 a.m., just down the road on FM 969 from the auto-pedestrian accident, killing one man. The other happened on FM 973 Wednesday night around 7 p.m., killing a man and critically injuring five people. In 2012, during the whole Wednesday through Sunday travel period, Austin police say they had one death on the roads and one person seriously hurt.

These latest crashes add to what's already been a deadly year. According to Austin police, crashes have killed 71 people in the city alone so far this year. That's about the same as where they were in 2012, a year which saw a 41% spike in traffic deaths.
