Crews Remain On-scene Overnight at Northwest Austin Fire

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT
Heavy flames and live ammunition popping off: the two kept fire crews busy for hours in Northwest Austin.

The four-plex on Summerwood Drive, near Steck and Mopac, erupted into flames around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Police have kept traffic, even our cameras from going onto the street overnight, as fire crews have been going through the damage, trying to figure out what caused the fire, and trying to make sure it doesn't spark up once again.

Firefighters say they could see the billowing smoke well before they got to the scene on Summerwood Drive, with heavy fire and smoke pouring out the back of the four-plex around 8 p.m. Wednesday.

That was one of two factors forcing them to stay outside as they fought the blaze, but that wasn't the only challenge they faced: thousands of rounds of ammunition inside the building added to the need and urgency to get the fire under control.

It's something that wasn't lost on fire crews or neighbors nearby.

"We were watching television and my wife heard a lot of pop pop pop pop pop, like that," recalled Bill Brubeck, who lives next door. "I'm aware of the fact that the man has had a lot of guns and a lot of ammunition in there."

Firefighters say the owner was out of town when the fire started. One woman inside a neighboring town home was able to make it out safely.

Despite the visible smoke and flames, no one was hurt.

Emergency crews expect to be on scene until about 6 a.m. Investigators are still looking into what sparked the fire, and firefighters are still putting together a damage estimate.
