Cyber Monday Advice For Safe Online Shopping

Updated: Monday, November 26 2012, 07:16 AM CST
Cyber Monday got its start with early online shoppers who waited until the Monday after Thanksgiving to use their work's faster Internet connection to do their online shopping.  If you're still holding on to this tradition here are some tips for doing it safely:

#1.  Make sure you have your employer's permission to shop online at work.  Some businesses have rules against personal use of office equipment.

#2.  Beware of fake email links.  The email may appear legit, but move your mouse over any links and you'll see they will take you to another site perhaps in another country.

#3.  Use just one credit card.  And make sure it is a credit card.  With a credit card you can challenge a charge if you don't get what you paid for.  A debit card will immediately withdraw the funds from your account.

#4.  Don't like their Facebook page.  If you don't know the business, beware.  Liking their page could allow them to access your personal profile and your list of friends.

#5.  Avoid shopping on open Wi-Fi.  It is convenient, but Wi-Fi that is not locked could allow nearby hackers to read your signal and intercept credit card numbers and other private information.
