Elvis' Birthday Celebrated In Graceland And In Austin

Iconic showman Elvis Presley would have turned 78 today. In Graceland they're marking the day with birthday cake and the opening of two new exhibits. One focuses on The King's 33 movies and the other on his "Aloha from Hawaii" TV special. "Aloha from Hawaii" was the first use by a solo entertainer of the still fairly new technology of satellite television to transmit his show around the world. An estimated one billion people saw the special broadcast live from Hawaii.
Here in Austin, Chuy's restaurants consider Elvis somewhat of a patron saint ever since that first velvet Elvis poster went up in the original Chuy's on Barton Springs Rd. Today they celebrate Elvis' birthday with food specials and Elvis impersonators at every restaurant. And customers dressed as Elvis or Priscilla Presley eat free.
