Expert Baker Shares Thanksgiving Decorating Tips

Updated: Tuesday, November 26 2013, 08:00 AM CST

Thanksgiving is right around the corner. If you're tasked with bringing dessert, Make It Sweet in North Austin has some decorating tips to make those sweets standout.

If you're making pies, why not make them festive? Jennifer Bartos, owner of Make It Sweet says you can use cookie cutters to make leaves from pie crust and then dust them with colorful luster dust. Get the kids involved and trace their hands in pre-made crust, then paint with edible colors.

For cookies, line them with royal icing, then fill the cookie with thinned out royal icing. You can also add some color to separate portion of thinned out royal icing to make feathers. Bartos suggests having toothpicks on standby to fine tune the feathers. While you let the icing dry, roll some brown fondant into little balls to make the body of a turkey. Don’t forget an orange beak! Place the turkey on the cookie and you have a cookie worthy of being eaten.

Bartos also has a simple, but great idea for a holiday cupcake. Put green butter cream into a piping bag with a grass tip. Squeeze the piping bag, touch the cupcake lightly and pull away. Then roll the base of a pumpkin out of orange fondant and use a toothpick to make the grooves of the pumpkin. Top it off with a chocolate fondant stem and voila! You have a Thanksgiving cupcake to be proud of.

If you're in charge of baking this year, but don't have any dessert ideas yet, Bartos has a simple pumpkin chocolate chip layer cake recipe for you. Bake a pumpkin sheet cake and cut out layers with a ring mold. Each layer add icing and sprinkle with chocolate chops. Don't forget to use acetate to keep your edges clean.
