Google Announcement Draws Near

No one from the City of Austin or Google will say that today's announcement will be about Google bringing its high speed fiber-based Internet service to Austin.  But the most telling sign is that the governor himself is taking time to be there.

Austin would become only the second metro area in the United States to have Google's ultra-fast home Internet service.  Google is talking speeds of one gigabit or a thousand megabits per second while typical home Internet speeds right now are in the 1 to 5 megabit range.

The Google Fiber internet service is currently only available in certain neighborhoods in Kansas City.  The Internet service by itself is offered at $70 a month, but when combined with a companion digital TV service it jumps to $120 a month plus the usual taxes and fees.  On Facebook we're asking if you would switch to Google Fiber at that price point.   To join in the conversation go to

We should note that if Google Fiber is coming to Austin, it would probably have a slow roll out similar to Kansas City meaning it would only be available in limited areas while it establishes its local operation.  Google’s official announcement is scheduled for 11:00 this morning at a downtown events center.
