Grand Opening Boardwalk Trail At Lady Bird Lake

Updated: Friday, June 6 2014, 09:27 AM CDT

The much anticipated Boardwalk Trail at Lady Bird Lake opens June 7. The grand opening will be held at 10:00 am at the eastern end of the trail off of Lakeshore Drive. The trail will open to pedestrians by 11:00 am.

Marty Stump, City of Austin Parks Project Coordinator, says up until now pedestrians, runners and bikers were forced to use the Riverside Drive sidewalk, which crossed over Interstate 35, to complete the 10.1 mile trail loop. The Boardwalk Trail will now connect the 1.1 mile gap from South Congress to Lakeshore Park, doing away with any safety concerns.

A portion of the boardwalk is on land and the remainder is built along the shoreline of Lady Bird Lake. Stump says the boardwalk was designed with concrete to withstand wear and tear and flooding.

The grand opening will feature a ribbon cutting ceremony, music by SoundWaves, a drumline march across the Boardwalk and an aerial dance performance under I35.
