IRS Phone Scam Warning

Updated: Friday, March 21 2014, 09:14 AM CDT

It could be the largest phone scam ever.

The Internal Revenue Service says more than $1 million has been stolen from thousands of unsuspecting people. Federal authorities say the calls involve scammers telling callers they owe taxes that must be paid immediately or the caller will face arrest, deportation, loss of a business or driver’s license.

According to the Inspector General, legitimate IRS officials typically reach out by mail first, not phone calls.

Callers should also beware of demands that require payments to be made with a pre-paid debit card, credit card or wire transfer.

All reports should be made to the IRS.
