Local BBQ Spot Still Dishing It Out

Updated: Wednesday, July 11 2012, 07:49 AM CDT
If you’re looking for some late night munchies, look east young man.  Many in Austin’s music scene will tell you the place to go is Sam’s Barbeque on East 12th at Poquito Street.  The restaurant stays open until 3:00am… later if the customers keep coming.

Sam’s BBQ dates back to the 1940s when it was started by Sam Campbell.  Sam ran the place until the 1970s when he passed the baton to his cousin Dan Mays, and the Mays family been running it ever since.

The restaurant is decorated with snapshots and autographed photographs of the celebrities who stopped in.  Stevie Ray Vaughan, Los Lonely Boys, Bruce Springteen and more.  In fact they would have many more pictures but those were destroyed in a fire that razed the building in 1992.  Thanks to support from loyal customers, Sam’s BBQ re-opened just weeks later and has been going strong ever since.

What’s the secret of their success?  Owner Brian Mays says they put love into their food and treat their customers with love and respect.
