Machete Kills Slashing Into Theaters On Friday

Updated: Friday, October 11 2013, 08:05 AM CDT

With guns blazing, Austin's own Robert Rodriguez is about to release his latest "Mexploitation" action comedy. Machete Kills opens on Friday. Rodriguez and stars Danny Trejo and Alexa Vega talked to KEYE-TV Entertainment Reporter Bettie Cross about the movie that was shot in and around Austin.

Machete Kills celebrated its world premiere at Austin's Fantastic Fest. Director Robert Rodriguez brings Danny Trejo back as Machete.

"I would call him every other day, 'Hey Robert, are we going to make that movie or not?'", said Trejo.

Finally, with a $20 million dollar budget the machine guns were loaded.

"It's like going to an amusement park," said Trejo.

"It's just a blast. It's a big, fun, multi-character, hilarious movie," said Rodriguez.

"It's absolutely absurd. The non-stop barrage of non-stop cameos is wild and wonderful," said Tim League, founder of the Alamo Drafthouse where the movie premiered.

From Mel Gibson to Jessica Alba to Sofia Vergara none of the stars take their role, or the movie, too seriously.

Lady Gaga scored her first movie role in Machete Kills

"She saw Machete and wished she'd been in it. So I thought she's a fan, I'm going to call her up and give her a role in the next one," said Rodriguez.

Many of the A-listers making cameos shot their scenes in less than 24 hours.

"If they say yes, I will make it work," said Rodriguez. "Charlie Sheen, he's throughout the whole movie and he shot in one day. Lady Gaga shot in one day. Cuba Gooding Jr. shot in one day. Sofia Vergara shot in two days."

The women in Machete Kills are all drop dead gorgeous, but they're also armed and dangerous.

"I grew up in a family of 10 kids, five of them were my sisters, and so I grew up with very strong women in my life. So all my female characters are strong. That's just my world view, that's how I grew up," said Rodriguez.

"Kill Joy, she's out there kicking' butt. She not just, like Danny would like to say, eye candy," said Alexa Vega.

Vega is best known for playing Carmen Cortez in the Spy Kids film series that was directed by Rodriguez.

"Even though I'm 25 now, it's hard to make that transition because so many people still view you as that young girl," said Vega. "I think Kill Joy is the perfect kind of break out role."

This Rodriguez adventure romp is really a live-action cartoon with no message other than how much blood, gore, and outrageous silly fun can be packed into one hour and 46 minutes.

Machete Kills is rated "R" for strong bloody violence throughout, language and some sexual content. It opens Friday, October 11.
