Man in Killed in Attempted Jewelry Store Burglary

Updated: Monday, April 14 2014, 08:28 AM CDT

Elgin Police say one man is dead and two other people are in custody following an attempted burglary.

Police say just before 1 a.m. Monday morning they received reports of shots being fired at Harper’s Jewelry store. When they arrived on scene, they found the body of 41-year-old Robert Trevino. The owner of the jewelry store told police he fired his weapon when he found Trevino trying to break into a jewelry case.

Two other people, believed to be accomplices fled the scene, but were later caught by police. They were treated for minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Elgin Police say Trevino has an extensive criminal record and was most recently implicated in another burglary incident in the same jewelry store two weeks ago.
