Mopac Toll Lanes Breaking Ground Today

Updated: Friday, October 18 2013, 06:52 AM CDT

If you drive Mopac, get ready for possibly an even slower trip during the next two years. This morning, officials break ground on the $200 million Mopac Improvement Project. It's adding a toll lane in each direction from Parmer to Lady Bird Lake to try to ease congestion.

Here's what to expect: on Friday morning, officials break ground on the Mopac Improvement Project. Over the next few weeks, crews will do prep work along the corridor, but in December, full blown construction and some potential headaches start north of 2222. Crews will put up barriers and shift traffic over. By next year, the entire 11 mile stretch will become a work zone, with lane closures at night, construction during the day, even some lanes narrowing. Parts of the frontage road, shoulder, and cross streets will also close during the day. Officials say that could mean more drivers cutting through on other roads.

Even when crews are working on the side, officials say get ready for more slow down. They also say people living near the construction can expect noise, dust, and light pollution. Crews are constructing seven miles of sound walls, but no timeline has been set.

Officials have set up a 24-hour hotline to report construction-related concerns. For that number and more information on the project: www.mopacexpress.com
