More Americans Celebrating Halloween This Year

Updated: Thursday, October 18 2012, 05:42 PM CDT

A new study shows 7 in 10 Americans plan to celebrate Halloween this year.

That's up 68.7 percent from 2011.

So what costumes are trending?

According to Halloween Express in Cedar Park they are selling a lot of zombie, superhero and cartoon costumes.

But in Austin a lot of people choose to make their own costumes.

Researchers say nearly one-third go to stores for inspiration. The rest look on social media sites like Facebook, Twitter or Pinterest.

Store owner Jeremy Bourne says people buy latex, make-up and masks to create their own look. In fact, they have the largest selection of movie quality masks in the city.

However, the political season is influencing costumes as well. Some are looking for Big Bird, others are buying Barack Obama and Mitt Romney masks.

If there weren't enough polls, buycostumes.com is tallying how many people buy what political mask.

Since 2000, the company has mirrored the results of the Presidential election.

In Texas the results show 61% have bought Obama masks, 39 percent Romney.
