Murders Drop In Austin During 2013

Updated: Thursday, January 2 2014, 05:26 PM CST
Later Thursday, we're expecting to learn more about a deadly shooting in downtown Austin that happened just minutes before midnight on New Year's Eve.

Two unarmed security guards at UMC Brackenridge witnessed the shooting outside the E.R. They say they followed the gunman until off-duty police officers arrested the suspect.

Jesus Rodriguez, Jr., has now been charged with murder. The victim has not been identified. There's also still no word on a motive.

That shooting came in just minutes before midnight, making it the 24th and final murder of the year in Austin. Still, it was a less violent year from the previous two years, down from 33 murders in 2012 and 27 murders in 2011.

Shootings made up around 40% of the 2013 murders, right around what APD saw the year before. Stabbings made up a third of the murders, up from the year before.

The FBI named Austin the second-safest city in America when it comes to violent crime in 2012, and numbers show the per capita murder rate steadily going down over the last 20 years.
