New DPS Report Shows Gang Activity In Central Texas

Updated: Friday, April 18 2014, 07:46 AM CDT
Gangs in Texas: according to a new DPS report, the problem may be far more serious than people realize. According to their findings, it's estimated more than 4,600 gangs with more than 100,000 members call Texas home. Officials say there's one threat in particular they're worried about: the growing ties between Texas gangs and Mexican drug cartels in large cities and smaller towns. Officials say they're teaming up to smuggle drugs, weapons, people, and cash into Texas.

The report shows heavy gang activity in major cities, and that includes Austin. They're calling Central Texas and some counties to the southeast home to some of the state's most established gangs. The biggest players in the area include the Texas Mexican Mafia, Texas Syndicate, and Tango Blast Austin along with their San Antonio clique. The report also lists at least nine other "significant gangs" in the report, including well-known groups like the Bloods, the Crips, and the Aryan Brotherhood.

The report says the goal now is to reduce the threat to zero by not only targeting mid- and top-level gang bosses, but also figuring out their money structure and seizing those assets.
