Not So Blue Blue Moon on Friday

Updated: Friday, August 31 2012, 09:13 AM CDT
On Friday night, look to the skies.  You'll see a full moon, but this will be no ordinary moon.

It will be a blue moon, or our second full moon in the month of August.  If any given month has two full moons, the second is considered 'blue'.

Not so Blue:   However this blue moon on Friday will not be so blue.  Technically it should look like any other full moon, bright and grey.  That is, unless the right size particles of ash or smoke are in the air.  These can scatter red light, allowing other colors to pass through, giving the moon a blue-ish tint.

Once in a Few Years:   Also, you might want to think twice about using the phrase 'Once in a blue moon'.  It is not as rare as you might think.  We see blue moon about once ever 2.7years.  In fact, over the next 10 years, we will witness 4 blue moons; In July 2015, January and March 2018, and October 2020.

We'd love to see you pictures of the full moon!
