Overnight Standoff in Fredericksburg Ends with Police Shootout

Updated: Thursday, December 19 2013, 06:30 AM CST

New overnight a scary situation as police and a suspect exchange shots during a standoff in Fredericksburg. It happened at the Valero on highway 16 near Walsh.   At this hour at least one person is in custody. Police say no one was hurt, and officials on scene don't believe anyone else was in the store during the standoff.

A Texas Ranger on scene tells us he was called to the scene around 10 p.m. Wednesday and at that point the standoff had been going on at least a couple of hours. He tells us the suspect was a young man who appeared to be in his 20s. The standoff ended around midnight. He believes nobody else was inside the store besides the suspect when the standoff began.

Police, including a negotiator, remained on scene investigating until around 4:30 a.m., combing through the store and the parking lot. Into the morning the gas station remained closed and roped off with crime scene tape, the parking lot covered with shell casings, nearly 30 visible bullet holes on the front windows and walls, and two of the windows apparently shot out.

Fredericksburg police officers we spoke with on scene, on the phone, and at the police station referred comment to the police chief or their spokesperson, both of whom were unavailable overnight. A lieutenant at the station tells us a press release would be sent out and more information would be available Thursday morning.
