Photo Exhibit Dedicated to Iconic Inexpensive Plastic Camera

Updated: Tuesday, July 24 2012, 12:30 PM CDT
It is called the Diana and thousands were originally sold in the 1960s and 70s.

The inexpensive plastic camera was created in a mold which made it easy to quickly clone and customize for promotional use by many companies at the time.

The Diana’s plastic lens produces a soft focus quality and had quite a cult following of artists and everyday people alike, looking to shoot images different from the high-end glass lens counterparts of the time.  The camera’s main selling point – besides the low prices – is that it is always ready to shoot, no need to wait for auto-exposure or auto-focus.

Lomography got their hands on the original Diana mold in the early 2000s leading to the creation of the Diana F which gave photographers, for the first time, the ability to shoot pinhole, and use both multiple film formats and multiple lens focal lengths.

The Diana World Tour of over 100 vintage Diana cameras has arrived in Austin, and has been paired with custom art pieces as made with Diana F cameras, as well as prints of images as photographed with the Diana F , which are on silent auction to benefit local charities.  The Diana World Tour is on exhibition at the Lomography Gallery Store Austin downtown at 912 Congress Avenue through Sat., Aug. 11.
