South Austin Popular Culture Center Celebrates Armadillo World Headquarters

Updated: Monday, August 6 2012, 09:00 AM CDT
It's long gone but not forgotten.  Tuesday (8/07) at 7:00pm at the South Austin Popular Culture Center, fans of the Armadillo World Headquarters will gather to remember the mammoth music venue that put Austin on the live music map.  August 7th would have been The Dillo's 42nd anniversary.  The abandoned warehouse operated as a live music venue and recording studio through the 1970s.  Hundred of musical acts of all kinds from the Austin Ballet to Frank Zappa took to the stage.  The Armadillo World Headquarters earned a reputation for great shows at very reasonable prices.  Tickets were in the $2 to $3 range, and people still talk about paying $1 to see a young Bruce Springsteen perform there.  The Dillo died from complications caused by running up a lot of debt and getting an irresistible offer for the land it sat on.
