SUV Slams Into Apartment With Family Inside

Updated: Monday, November 25 2013, 04:34 AM CST

Breaking overnight, an SUV slams into a North Austin apartment with a family of five inside.

It happened just after 1 a.m. at the Longspur Crossing Apartments near Lamar and Rundberg. Right now officials aren’t sure if the crash was weather-related and are looking into the cause.  No reports of arrests so far.

We saw what appeared to be the driver getting items out of the car with police.

Video you’ll only see on KEYE was taken just moments after the SUV plowed into the kitchen and bathroom. Esmerar Torres tells us he and his family, including young kids, were sleeping when he heard what he thought was the washing machine exploding. That’s what Torres woke up and saw his kitchen destroyed.

“We were just scared and wondering when we’d be able to go back to sleep,” he said, translated from Spanish. “The car came in through the kitchen and restroom.

If it had passed through the kitchen, there’s people there. There was a person in the living room.”

At last check, emergency officials were trying to get in touch with apartment management to find the family a place to stay. If there’s no space available, they could look at other agencies like the Red Cross.
