Texans Hit The Road For Long July 4 Weekend

Updated: Saturday, August 3 2013, 04:13 PM CDT

Here's an interesting little fact: according to AAA Texas 18% of July 4th weekend travelers started their trip before the week even began.  Must be nice.  The rest of us are hitting the road this week with July 3rd forecast to be the busiest day on Texas highways.

AAA Texas estimates 2.9 million Texans will hit the road to travel 50 miles or more from home over the long Independence Day weekend.  That number is down just slightly from last year when July 4th was on a Wednesday.  That gave travelers an extra day to turn the holiday into a five day weekend.  Now that's something worth hitting the road for.

And speaking of hitting road. Most July 4th travelers are heading out today, Wednesday July 3:

July 4th Vacation Departures
9% Monday
19% Tuesday
32% Wednesday
15% Thursday
7% Friday

Texans love their road trips.  Ten times as many people will be driving as flying or taking the bus or train.  And that's despite the fact AAA Texas says the average Texan will be making a July 4th round trip of nearly a thousand miles.
