Up To Three People Shot Outside Downtown Club

Updated: Friday, November 8 2013, 07:15 AM CST
New overnight, at least one armed man is on the loose after shooting as many as three people downtown. It happened just before the bars were closing around 2 a.m. Friday at 5th and Lavaca.

Detectives tell us what started as a verbal fight inside a club at 305 W. 5th Street, spilled onto the sidewalk outside, and ended with a man firing five to 12 shots into a crowd.  Police say the suspect and possibly others ran off before speeding away in a vehicle.

Police say they know of two people that were hit, possibly a third, and say friends took them to the hospital immediately afterwards. Detectives tell KEYETV the first known victim was shot three times, a second at least once, and both were last reported to be in good condition.

“This does harken back to the Spiro’s shooting of a few years ago down on Red River,” said Det. Jarrett Crippen of APD. “We’re just lucky no one was killed.”

Police don’t believe the parties knew each other. Now they’re trying to straighten out witness accounts.

“Any incident down here in Austin’s party district, you have a lot of people, some of them have been indulging in alcohol, so sometimes stories do vary,” said Det. Crippen. “So right now we’re pretty sure what happened, but we are still looking for more information.”

Det. Crippen said detectives are hoping a HALO camera across the street may have captured the incident and can help them track down the shooter.

The detective also added he believes the suspects are from out of town. Going forward, APD is asking anyone who may have seen anything to give them a call.
