Davis Slams Abbott Over Income Disparities In Austin

Updated: Monday, March 24 2014, 01:36 PM CDT

Wendy Davis spoke in Austin Monday morning and continued to hammer Attorney General Greg Abbott over income disparities between men and women in his office.

The Democratic hopeful for governor has been using the issue for days now to batter her Republican opponent and appeal to critical women and minority voters.

In a crowded room at Sholz Beer Garden in Downtown Austin this morning, Davis accused Abbott of avoiding questions about equal pay since an interview earlier this month.

"I have a message for Greg Abbott today: Stop hiding behind your staff members. Stop hiding behind your surrogates. This Texas gal is calling you out," Davis told the crowd. "Act like a Texan and answer this question for yourself: what on earth is going on at your Attorney General's office? Why do you think it's ok to pay women in your office less than men when they do the same work?"

In a press release sent out just before noon on Monday, the Abbott campaign didn't answer Davis' questions but instead returned a fusillade accusing the state senator of having "dubious ethics" over lingering questions related to her legal counsel for public bond offerings.

A Davis spokesperson said they are reviewing the claims made by the Abbott campaign.
