Incumbent Lt. Gov. Dewhurst Facing Tough Primary

Updated: Tuesday, March 4 2014, 06:41 PM CST

Because of the power of its position the race of Texas Lieutenant Governor is the biggest one on the ballot -- and incumbent David Dewhurst is facing an uncertain Republican primary.

Dewhurst is seeking a fourth term against Land Commissioner Jerry Patterson, Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples and State Senator Dan Patrick.

A win for Dewhurst is far from certain after his unexpected loss to Tea Party favorite Ted Cruz in 2012 to replace retiring U.S. Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Dewhurst is facing some tough competition mainly from State Senator Dan Patrick. Political analysts believe the two may end up in a runoff. If that happens it will take place on May 27.

State Senator Leticia Van de Putte is running unopposed in the Democratic Primary for the Lt. Gov. seat.

We'll update this story as we learn the election results.
